Dear Patron,

New technologies often take us to new ways of life. The impact of Internet in business, profession and life had been tremendous. It continues to evolve and value add. However, it also leads to new crimes and problems such as intrusion, fraud, pilferage, data compromise, financial theft etc. I would like to take you through some such endevours that is currently going on the Net on a global

basis. The purpose of writing is to enable you to exercise caution when you see such communications reaching your mailbox.

There are e-mails emanating from the African continent that will request your help in clearing millions of dollars that the mailer’s late VIP father or relative had kept in the bank. Your ‘why me’ question is properly addressed by the party. To the perplexed recipient, it will look like a windfall and he would jump at establishing relationship with the sender. This has been investigated by responsible netizens including leading computer magazine, Dataquest. As per report, many from India had fallen prey to such invitations. With the greed for easy money, they accept the party’s call to send couple of thousand dollars towards legal and establishment charges, which is laundered by the perpetrators through a multiplicity of complex bank transactions. Should you get such a mail, best ignore it and delete. We may not be able to take legal remedial measures against these because of complexities involved (foreign countries, many of which are famous for lawlessness)

Another fraud that is frequently observed comes from the so-called gambling sites. They would mail you that you have won a million dollar lottery and would ask you to send three or four hundred dollars towards registration. Beware, money sent is money lost.

Then there are hosts of Porn sites that entice you with human anatomy. They keep mailing you with sample photos or video clippings. Registering yourself with such sites can become very costly indeed. Not only that you lose money, your details could stand exposed to the global mafia. You wouldn’t know, a small connection that you established for a momentary pleasure could land you in real mess. Be very careful.

Also there are spams and the direct mails from companies offering you plethora of products and services. For a serious Net user, these are irritations. We have to consider them as ‘occupational hazards’. Today, there are solutions that could block spams and intrusions. It is time those regular business users of the Net implemented Intrusion Detection Systems, Firewalls etc along with Antivirus software. Do consult your IT provider for such solutions. Definitely these solutions can bring peace of mind.

The idea of writing this is not to scare you. Every new development will have two sides, one for the betterment of the community and the other that brings harm. We need to be vigilant not fall prey to the evil operators. It also calls for self-control while surfing the Net.

Thanking you and wishing you the best of the season,

Truly,

S. R. Nair
Managing Director

 Caring for your  Computer

Taking good care of your computer will ensure trouble-free operation and reduce the risk of damage to your computer. Here are some points while travelling with the Notebook computer:

  • Before traveling with your computer, make a backup of your hard disk data into floppy disks / CDs or other storage devices. As an added precaution, bring along an extra copy of your important data.

  • Make sure the battery pack is fully charged.

  • Make sure the computer is turned off and the top cover is securely closed.

  • Do not leave objects in between the keyboard and closed display.

  • Disconnect the AC adapter from the computer, and take it with you.

  • Use the AC adapter as the power source and as a battery-recharger.

  • Hand-carry the computer. Do not check it in as luggage.

  • If you need to leave the computer in the car, put it in the trunk of the car to avoid exposing the computer to excessive heat.

  • When going through airport security, it is recommended that you send the computer and floppy disks through the X-ray machine (the device you set your bags on). Avoid the magnetic detector (the device you walk through) or the magnetic wand (the hand-held device used by security personnel).

  • If you plan to travel abroad with your computer, consult your dealer for the appropriate AC power cord for use in your country of destination.

Microsoft Project Server
Successful project management requires cost-effective, timely completion of projects that align with business objectives. Your organization can manage its projects to achieve better business results by ensuring that the infrastructure and tools are in place for project teams to collaborate, learn from past experiences, and

acquire the necessary information to act quickly.

Microsoft Project Server provides organizations with an extensible technology platform to securely develop and successfully deploy best practices for project management across your organization. Through a centrally-managed repository for standardized project and resource data, Microsoft Project Server provides teams with convenient access to business-critical information through its Web interface, Microsoft Project Web Access. By providing powerful Web-based collaboration, analysis, and reporting tools, Microsoft Project Web Access enables entire project teams—including team members, resource managers, and executives—to stay informed, up-to-date, and on track.

With its enterprise-ready security and performance capabilities, Microsoft Project Server provides a customisable foundation for organizations to successfully develop and integrate their project management processes with their current and future business systems.

  • Quick Access to Business-Critical Information
  • With Microsoft Project Web Access, team members and executives can quickly view, analyse, and update project information without installing Microsoft Project on their computers. With just a Web browser, each user has access to powerful tools to manage project work in a single, consolidated location. Since project and resource information is stored centrally and consistently in Microsoft Project Server, companies can standardize reporting practices for strategic insight into the performance of a project portfolio and efficiently manage and optimise resources across projects.

  • Robust Management and Administration

  • Microsoft Project Server delivers secure, manageable access to business-critical information. Administrators can control access to Microsoft Project Server by assigning permissions to groups and users, so team members and executives can view and update only the information that they have permission to access. New scalability enhancements offer support for enterprise usage scenarios so your organization can support growth and handle increased demand.

  • Highly Extensible Platform

  • Microsoft Project Server provides a customisable platform and tools that can be extended and integrated across business systems to meet your company’s project, resource, and knowledge management needs. An open architecture, featuring industry standards such as XML messaging and SOAP, delivers smooth alignment and information exchange with other business applications and databases.

Why should I use Project Server?

Together, Microsoft Project Professional and Microsoft Project Server offer your organization a comprehensive enterprise project management solution. Collaborative tools and shared data enable workgroups and stakeholders to stay informed and ensure that initiatives support company goals. The customizable environment and tools can be extended and integrated

across systems to suit any organization’s project and knowledge management needs.
  • Enterprise standardization: You can use new enterprise project management tools to standardize and customize Microsoft Project, for consistent reporting and analysis across your organization.

  • Enterprise resource management: Get accurate information about resource availability so you can assemble the optimal team for each project. Manage resources visually through availability and usage graphs, or let the automated Resource Substitution Wizard analyze the skills required for a project and then match the qualified employees to that project.

  • What-if analysis: Gain insight into your organization’s operations and make more informed decisions with help from simulation and analysis tools that evaluate resource assignments, scenarios, and general project data.

  • Team collaboration: Collaborate with your entire team by using the improved Microsoft Project Web Access,* a feature of Microsoft Project Server. Team members and stakeholders with permission can view, update, and run queries on project information—just by using a Web browser.

  • Centralization: Easily organize, track, and store project-related details in a shared, central location. Take advantage of new integration with SharePoint™ Team Services from Microsoft to link documents to projects and tasks, share documents, and track issues on individual projects posted to the server running Microsoft Project Server.

  • Intuitive planning: Get productive immediately by using Project Guide, a new interactive tool that helps you quickly set up plans, track projects, and directly access more features in Microsoft Project. New smart tags let you know when resource reassignments and other changes affect the project schedule, and they even offer helpful alternatives.

  • Enhanced integration: Get tighter integration with and a smoother transition between Microsoft Project and other Microsoft applications. Import task lists created in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft OutlookŪ, and Microsoft Project Web Access directly into Microsoft Project. Plus, the familiar Microsoft Office interface and toolbars make it easy to use Microsoft Project, even if you’ve never used it before.
Looking ahead
  • Versions

The current version is Microsoft Project Server 2002. However Microsoft is all set to launch the next version Microsoft Project 2003, which is expected to be available in the second half of 2003.
Project 2003 includes:

  • Microsoft Office Project Standard 2003

  • Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003

  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2003, and

  • Microsoft Office Project Web Access (PWA)

  • Enterprise Project Management (EPM)

Businesses function better when people, resources, and projects are working together toward a common goal aligned with the overall strategic direction. The challenges facing businesses today—including mobile workers, distributed operations, and an increased focus on positive return on investment (ROI)—can make it difficult to keep people connected and moving in the same direction.

The Microsoft Solution for Enterprise Project Management is a true enterprise-class solution that aligns people and systems, drawing business operations closer together. The solution provides visibility into all facets of your business by providing the project collaboration and analysis tools you need to make informed, proactive decisions.

Project Professional 2003, Project Server 2003, and Project Web Access are designed to work together to make up the EPM Solution. By using the flexible reporting and analysis capabilities in the EPM solution, organizations can receive information to help optimize resources, prioritize work, and align their project portfolio with overall business objectives.
